20th Oct, 2023, Serdang – The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) through its Putra Sarjana seminar has organised three (3) sessions with guest speakers for the month of October 2023. The seminars that focus on writing techniques, postgraduate academic processes, personal values, and effective communication are occasionally held for free, for current UPM postgraduates.

The session on October 6th, 2023, was conducted online with Prof. Ts. Dr. Goh Yong Meng, Deputy Director, Office Research Grant Division, Research Management Centre, UPM. The sharing entitled Securing Grants Through an Effective Proposal had a total of 250 attendees through Zoom Meetings. Prof. Dr. Goh has shared several important tips in presenting a thesis proposal or any form of findings to a group of audience. This covers voice control techniques, type of presentation materials, and the pre-presentation rehearsals that should be emphasized by a student. The participants actively asked questions and their positive reviews expressed the efficiency of Prof. Dr. Goh’ s presentation. The session went on for 2 hours, 10.00 a.m till 12.00 p.m.

The monthly series was continued with the session by Dr. Thavamaran Kanesan, Chief Editor and Educational Consultant Proofreading by a UK PhD. Dr.Thavamaran has explained on the appropriate techniques in gathering data and journal review witing as a graduation requirement. This nerve-wrecking stage of the postgraduate study is often the concern of students, hence, was clearly explained by the guest speaker through Thesis Literature Matrix session. Dr. Thava’s explanation regarding the topic kept the 280 participants active and interested throughout the slot. The seminar was conducted online, on October 11th, 2023, from 10.15 a.m. till 12.15 p.m. The 2 hours sharing session ended with a photography and Q&A session by the students.

The third session of Putra Sarjana seminar entitled ‘Biosafety and Biosecurity: Awareness Briefing’ that was given by Prof. Dr. Wong Mui Yun the Deputy Director, Institute of Plantation Studies, UPM and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leslie Than Thian Lung from Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. The seminar that took place at the Auditorium Raden Umar, Faculty of Engineering, UPM went for 2 hours, from 10.00 am till 12.00 pm.

Around 40 postgraduates have attended the seminar that was conducted free of charge. An elaborate Q&A session was conducted at the end of the session to provide the opportunities for the students to ask question or clarify the topic better.
