7,056 graduates to receive their scrolls at UPM’s 39th Convocation

SERDANG, Oct 19 – Some 7,056 graduates consisting of 469 Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D), 1,860 (Master), 4,299 (Bachelor) and 428 (Diploma) will be receiving their degrees and diplomas during Universiti Putra Malaysia’s 39th Convocation to be held from October 31 to November 3, 2015.

UPM Chancellor, Tuanku Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will be conferring the Ph.Ds, Masters, bachelors and diplomas to the graduates at the first session on the first day of the ceremony (October 31) at UPM’s Main Hall of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PKKSSAAS) Arts and Culture Centre.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan said the presentation of degrees to be spread out in eight sessions for four days will also be officiated by three UPM Pro-Chancellors - Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Dr. Nayan Ariffin at the second session (October 31), fifth session (November 2) and seventh session (November 3); Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek at the third session (November 1), sixth (November 2) and eighth session (November 3) and Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh at the fourth session (November 1).

According to him, UPM will be conferring the Honorary Doctor of Science to Science Advisor to Prime Minister, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid; Honorary Doctor of Plantation Management to United Malacca Bhd Chairman, Tan Siok Choo; and Honorary Doctor of Engineering to Chief Executive Officer and owner of Westar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim in the first session on October 31.



The Professor Emeritus Award will be presented to former professor at the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Karen Anne Crouse @ Ani Abdullah at the second session on October 31, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Fauzi told a Press conference.

Meanwhile, a graduate in Bachelor of Agriculture Science, Ermelia Rohayu Ramlan has been chosen  to win four university awards – Chancellor’s Gold Award Medal, Royal Education Gold Award Medal (Bumiputera), Alumni Gold Award and Gold Award Medal of Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Rashdan Baba while a graduate in Doctor in Veterinary Medicines, Ng Geok Lim will receive two awards, that is Royal Education Gold Award Medal (non-Bumiputera) and Yayasan Pak Rashid Gold Award Medal.

Tuanku Chancellor will be conferring the accolades. His Royal Highness will also give away Putra Agribio Medal to Daniel Mohan Jacob who is a graduate in Doctor of Veterinary Medicines; Doctor of Philosophy Gold Medal to Tumirah Khadirin (PhD in Nano Science), Institut Teknologi Maju; Gold Award in Master with Thesis to Nur Atiqah  Mohamad Aziz (Master of Green Technology), Institut Teknologi Maju;  MTDC Annual Book Award (Innnovation/Commmercialization/Business) to Phuah Kit Teng (PhD in AgriBusiness), Faculty of Agriculture; and Syed Kechik Award to Yap Ee Lyn (Bachelor of Science (Honours) Microbiology) of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.

Some 37 graduates in the inaugural Bachelor of Science Honours (Cell and Molecular Biology) and 177 who major in the inaugural Bachelor of Education (Primary School Education) with Honours will be receiving their scrolls in the first session (October 31) while 42 graduates in Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Science will be receiving theirs on November 1 in the fourth session of the ceremony.

Wendy Yeo Wai Yeng of Medical Biotechnology, Bioscience Institute, who is the first student to have graduated in PhD. Dual Degree programme with Universite Montpellier 2 (UM2) will receive her scroll at the third session (November 1).



Disabled student, Suhazli Muhamad will be receiving his degree in Bachelor of Computer Science (Multimedia) in the fifth session (November 2).

Among athletes of Commonwealth Games and Asia Games who will be graduating are Farah Ayuni Yahya, Noorhasliza Md Ali and Siti Shahida Saad (Women’s Hockey), and Mohd Shukri Abdul Mutalib (Men’s Hockey).

Ermelia Rohayu, when met in an interview, said she was awe-struck and could not believe it when she was informed that she had won four awards in this year’s convocation.



“My credits go to my parents…all these achievements are my presents for them, I am very grateful, indeed… At first, I was in daze when told that I had won four awards,” she said.

Asked for her secrets to success, Ermelia Rohayu, 24, who hails from Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, said besides working hard, she always asked for prayers and blessings from her parents.

“With parents’ blessings, we will always feel calm and able to do things, right. Almost every day, I will call both my parents,” she said. – UPM.
