75 SERATAS students participate in INSPEM math camp

SERDANG - Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM) organised a three-day Math Camp programme for students of Sekolah Menengah Sains Raja Tun Azlan Shah (SERATAS) Taiping, Perak, here.

The aim of the programme was to expose the students with outstanding potential to a wider scope of mathematical knowledge.

The programme was also supported by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, UPM and Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society (PERSAMA).

The camp was officiated by INSPEM director, Prof. Dato' Dr. Kamel Ariffin Mohd Atan and held from 22 to 24 August, 2014, involving a total of 75 students and five teachers from SERATAS.



"Based on the theme of this programme; Mathematics Exploration Beyond Knowledge, all the participating parties, especially learning institutions community, must ensure that the teaching and learning of Mathematics will continue to be strengthened so that it is constantly evolving," he said.

Participants were exposed to various activities involving 11 slots including a series of lectures, workshops and group exercises.



The areas of mathematical sciences that were focused in the camp were the history of science in mathematics, numerical analysis, mathematical physics, cryptography and information security, statistical and mathematical philosophy.

"Mathematics is not about calculations alone, the programme has succeeded in changing the minds of the students to appreciate mathematics," said a Senior Technical & Vocational Education Teacher, Ahmad Azmi, who represented SERATAS principal during the closing ceremony.
