SERDANG, 3 April (UPM) – A group of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students were so grateful of winning their respective competitions that they promptly donated part of their prize money to the university’s Wakaf Fund, an Islamic endowment fund to help the poor and needy.

Their generousity was recognised and lauded by the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) and the Putra Science Park as these students had already raised the image of UPM when they beat their peers the national and international level.

The first is a group of five students comprising Loh Chu Xin, Mohd Hafez Mohd Khalid, Norameerah Zamzuri, Nur Raihan Jabbar and Lee Soon Bon who had won 2nd place at the Public Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA) Business Simulation Competition last February.

The competition held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) required each competing team to generate creative ideas to produce a novel product and present the business plan for the product.

The group from the Faculty of Economics and Management, Engineering and Education who called themselves Apprentice Sdn. Bhd. bagged a cash prize of RM5,000 and a certificate of participation.

In the second case, Kaviyarasu Elangkovan, a 1st year student from the Faculty of Economics and Management won the 3rd prize of USD500 and a certificate at the Best 60 Second Presenter competition in Bangkok last month.

In the Global Social Venture Challenge South East Asia among his peers from the region, he presented his business plan in 60 seconds and answered all questions by the juries accurately.

In the ceremony the Apprentice Sdn Bhd donated RM500 to the trustee of the Wakaf Fund from the Bursar’s Office, UPM, Zulkiflee Othman, while Kaviyarsu gave RM150.  It was witnessed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran and the Director of Putra Science Park, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shamsilah Roslan.
