Putra Sarjana Seminar Series as a Mean to Assist Postgraduate Learning Processes

May 25th, 2023, Serdang – The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) through its Putra Sarjana seminar has organised two (2) sessions with guest speakers for the month of May 2023. The seminars that focus on writing techniques, postgraduate academic processes, personal values, and effective communication are occasionally held for free, for current UPM postgraduates.

The session on May 11th, 2023, was conducted online with Dr. Thavamaran Kanesan, the Chief Editor of Proofreading by a UK PhD. The sharing entitled Literature Review Applications: What can be done while I Review Literature? had a total of 231 attendees through Zoom Meetings. Dr Thava has explained several effective methods in looking for suitable literatures in writing an academic thesis. The participants actively asked questions and their positive reviews expressed the efficiency of Dr.Thavamaran’s presentation. The session went on for 2 hours 20 minutes, 9.15 a.m till 11.35 a.m.

The series was continued with the session by Prof.Dr. Zuriati Ahmad Zukarnain, Deputy Dean (Academic, Curriculum & Data) SGS. Prof.Zuriati has emphasized the appropriate techniques in preparing for and facing a viva voce. This nerve-wrecking stage of the postgraduate study is often the concern of students, hence, was clearly explained by the guest speaker through this Conquering Thesis & Viva Voce session. The seminar was conducted physically at the Raden Umar Auditorium, Faculty of Engineering on May 22nd , 2023, from 9.30 a.m till 11.30 a.m.

The third session took place with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dahlia Zawawi, Deputy Director of School of Business and Economics, referring to the factors a prospective student should take into consideration before enrolling in a PhD programme. Her interactive session was made up of personal experiences and inspiring stories of her former students. The seminar entitled ‘The Do's and Don'ts When Choosing a PhD Programme’ was held at the Taklimat Serdang Hall on May 24th ,2023, attended by 50 students. The 2 hours sharing session ended with a photography and Q&A session by the students.
