KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) innovators took great pride when they bagged 4 gold, 9 silver, 8 bronze medals and 1 Special Award in their overall 25 participations at the 2013 International Conference and Exposition on Invention of Institutions of Higher Learning (PECIPTA).

The highlight of the event was when an aficionado and his team from Faculty of Design and Architecture, Dr. Zulkifli Muslim won the gold and Special Award through his team's innovation, Transformation Based on Tropical Plant Design Images, Functional Design Innovation to Design, the research on the process of concept transformation of living plants in tiles and furniture manufacturing, buildings construction and interior decoration ornaments, which gained great acumen among the judges.

A team of connoisseurs from Faculty of Science led by Dr. Lim Hong Ngee, also won the gold with their magnum opus, High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode, the novel findings on supercapacitor electrode that has the power of energy storage and power capacity up to ~800 F/g, outdoing other ubiquitous electrodes in the market which can only store energy by  <200F/g.

It did not end there as UPM managed to bag another gold by Prof. Dr. Norhisam Misron and his team from Faculty of Engineering with their product, High Torque Motor for Oil Palm Electrical Cutter Application, a newly innovated electric motor with high torque density for the usage of electric cutters.

Another fellow researcher from Faculty of Science also made UPM proud when Prof. Dr. W. Mahmood Mat Yunus and his team bagged the gold after proving the team’s eminent intellectual prowess through their flagship, Novel Heavy Metal Ions Sensor Chips, a polymer sensor chip to detect dangerous heavy metal ions.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between UPM and Pakar Go Green Sdn. Bhd. to secure commercial partnership for its project, A Method for Producing Biopolymer, the invention led by Prof. Dr. Azni Idris from Faculty of Engineering.

A total of 11 universities involved in the signing of MoA with the industry representatives to establish a commercialisation partnership, in line with PECIPTA 2013 theme, "Transforming Research and Innovation Towards Commercialisation".

The event was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 7 to 9 November and officiated by Minister of Education II, Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh.
