UPM PhD Student wins 2018 Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition

Brisbane, 29th September – UPM PhD student from Faculty of Engineering, Yasmin Mustapha Kamil was crowned the winner of 2018 Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition. Yasmin defeated 58 others contestants from Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Yasmin was also voted as the winner for People’s Choice Award in the final competition held at University of Queensland and garnering AUD1000 research travel grant. This is the second year in a row that a student from a Malaysian University has taken out the top prize.

The winning 3MT presentation is entitled “Dengue Detective” which summarized her work on a label-free tapered optical fiber based sensor for quantitative sensing of Dengue II E proteins. Her supervisor is Dr. Muhammad Hafiz Abu Bakar of the Faculty of Engineering.

The 3MT competition was launched in 2008 at The University of Queensland as a means for graduate students to present their research in three minutes, using only one presentation slide. The challenge is in effectively communicating complicated information to the panel of judges and the wider audience in an engaging way.

Yasmin walked away with the prize of AUD6000 of research travel grant. The event started at 8.30 am and ended at 6.00 pm.
