UPM-VOLVO Develops Innovation to Reduce the Number of Trucks And Motorcycles

SHAH ALAM, 15 Jan – The Road Safety Research Centre (RSRC), University Putra Malaysia (UPM) together with VOLVO Malaysia Sdn. Bhd (VOLVO) are collaborating to develop innovative solutions to reduce the number of accidents involving lorries  and motorcycles in Malaysia.

The partnership involves (MIROS), Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre (SAFER, Sweden), Swedish Trade Council (STC) and Agency of Innovation Malaysia (AIM).

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Industry and Community Relations, Prof. Dr. Ing. Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo said that UPM will focus on formulating strategies according to the research findings.



Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia, Mansoor Ahmad said that this partnership is to create a safe traffic environment to reduce the fatality rate in accidents involving lorries and motorcycles.

Based on the statistics provided by the Royal Malaysia Police, 60 percent of the fatality cases on the road involved lorry drivers and motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists face risks 20 times higher compared to other vehicle drivers due to the vast difference in terms of the mass of the vehicles, the level of protection, and the speed,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Innovation Agency Malaysia, Mark Rozario said that this collaboration is also to create a network of transmitting and sharing of knowledge continuously about road safety issues in Malaysia and Sweden.


We hope that through this partnership, the innovative solutions will be able to develop a road safety awareness programme for road users as well as more effective road traffic enforcement, “ he said.

Also present at the function was the Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia, Bengt G Carlsson.
