UPM’s ‘Shot Your Target’ for better understanding of Mathematics

By Nurfarhana Binti Mohd Azmi

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15
  – Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Kelab Mahasiswa Matematik recently held a programme, named `Shot Your Target` for Form Five students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Segambut Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, to boost their interest in Mathematics.

Programme Director, Ahmad Danial Lokman said most of the students did not like the subject, particularly Additional Mathematics, as they said it was tough and that it was difficult to score an `A’ in the subject.

“This programme is aimed at boosting students’ confidence in Additional Mathematics by getting them to muster some topics in the subject,” he said

Amongst the activities held during the programme were ‘Add maths Paper 1 Drill’, ‘Add maths Paper 2 Drill’, a motivational session as well as a quiz.

He also said the programme would help students to determine their direction once they finish schooling.

“We are trying to provide them with the real picture of learning at higher learning institutions and promote UPM at the same time.”

Saying that the programme would produce trained facilitators with self-confidence, he added that it will also help in producing holistic and balanced graduates.

Facilitator, Anis Husna Helmi Zakuan said he was fortunate to have been picked as a facilitator for the programme.

This way, he said he was able to share whatever that he learned in UPM to participating students.

Meanwhile, head of Mathematics Committee, Nor Hadijah Hashim, expressed her support for the programme, saying that SMK Segambut Jaya is prepared to work with UPM Kelab Mahasiswa Matematik in the future.

“This programme has received a very positive feedback from participating students who said they would study harder to face Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia which is around the corner.” – UPM.
