What is Industrial PhD?

Industrial PhD offers an alternative route to industry practitioners who wish to pursue a doctorate degree while generating innovation and improving competitiveness via industry-based research.  This programme is an incentive from the Malaysian Government to encourage knowledge sharing among industry practitioners and academicians in order to produce highly knowledgeable professionals.  Students enroll under this programme are eligible to the financial assistance provided by the Ministry of Higher Education via the MyBrain15 Scholarship (maximum of RM50K for 4 years). The financial assistance is in the form of payment of tuition fees, thesis allowance, journal allowance, thesis examination fee, convocation fee, and supervision expenses.


Industrial PhD features are:

a)      The focus of the research is based on industrial issues or problems;

b)      Joint supervision (at least one supervisor will be assigned from university and one from industry). The supervisor from industry must possess substantial experience or expertise in the areas related to the research topic;

c)       Research is conducted in the industry and candidates do not have to leave their work place;

d)      The mode of study is full time;

e)      Supervision and monitoring process are similar to those practiced in a conventional PhD programme.


What are the fields of study offered for the programme?

There are wide ranges of field of study available that you can choose from particularly in engineering, business and economics, agriculture, food technology, computer science, biotechnology and etc.

What is the duration of study of the programme?

The duration of study which is financially supported by the Ministry is four (4) years.

What is the entry requirement?

A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification recognized by the University’s Senate. Please note that this programme is only eligible for Malaysian.

What is the application procedure?

To apply for the programme, please follow three (3) easy steps as below:

Step 1: Identify you supervisor at UPM and at your workplace for your PhD project

Step 2: Submit your application to UPM through the UPM online application system at together with the following documents:

a)      A copy of Master degree certificate;

b)      A copy of Master degree transcript;

c)       A copy of Identification Card;

d)      Research proposal;

e)      Supporting letter from employer;

f)       Payment of processing fee of RM63.60;

Step 3:  Submit an application for financial assistance to the Ministry of Higher Education. Please note that the application can only be submitted after you have received an admission offer letter from UPM. The School of Graduate Studies at UPM will assist you during the financial assistance application process to the Ministry.
