Master Environmental and Occupational Health


OVERVIEW

This programme is designed such that the graduates can further apply the acquired scientific and critical thinking skills to conduct research in their own workplace with minimal supervision to produce evidenced based decision.

Students will be exposed to the multi-disciplinary aspects of Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health which includes but not limited to the global and local policy and legislation, toxicology, industrial hygiene, human factors and ergonomics, research methodology, management system and engineering aspects in the management of Environmental and Occupational Health.

Thereon, should the lifelong learning process pique their interests, the students can opt to further their study to doctoral level.


OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the program are:
(a) To produce management level officer who are competent and capable in leading the field of Environmental and Occupational
     Health through services, research and lifelong learning;
(b) To produce management level officer with skills and knowledge in the management of Environmental and
     Occupational Health;
(c) To produce creative and innovative management level officer in Environmental and Occupational Health who are sensitive
     and responsible to the society and environmental sustainability.


CURICULUM STRUCTURE

  • This is a 3-semesters program (1.5 years).
  • The teaching and learning medium is English.
  • Students are required to complete 43 credit hours distributed as follow:

    - Core Courses   =  15 credit hours (5 subjects)
    - Specialization Courses =  15 credit hours (5 subjects)
    Elective courses  =   6 credit hours (2 subjects)
    Research Project =   7 credit hours
    Total =   43 credit hours



ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Option A:
Candidates must have a Bachelor Degree obtaining a CGPA of at least 2.750 or equivalent in any field of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Statistics), Engineering and related Health Sciences, AND 1 year of working experience in field related to Environmental and Occupational Health after receiving a Bachelor Degree OR;

Option B:
Candidates who have a Bachelor Degree by obtaining a CGPA of less than 2.750 but not less than 2.500 or equivalent in any field of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Statistics), Engineering and Health Sciences relevant may be considered in the event of having at least three (3) years working experience in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health upon receiving a Bachelor's Degree OR;

Option C:
Candidates who have a Bachelor Degree by obtaining a CGPA of less than 2.500 or equivalent in any field of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Statistics), Engineering and Health Sciences relevant may be considered in the event of having at least five (5) years working experience in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health upon receiving a Bachelor's Degree;

Language Requirement (applicable to International Applicants):
International applicants must have obtained a minimum score of 550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version) or Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training), or 79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test or 213 for TOEFL Computer-based Test or its equivalent.  The validity period should not be more than five years.

Master Of Pathology (Application for entry is handled by Ministry of Health Malaysia)


OVERVIEW

Anatomic Pathology, Haematology, Medical Microbiology and Chemical Pathology. Candidates will undergo teaching and learning in all the modules, ten weeks for each module, at the Department of Pathology, FMHS, UPM. At the end of Phase I, candidates will sit for the Professional Exam I in General Pathology. The candidates must obtained a pass in all the papers before they can proceed to Phase II of the programme.

Phase II of the programme is of three (3) years duration in one of the disciplines of pathology chosen by the candidate. Candidates are posted at the accredited and gazzeted clinical diagnostic laboratory, Ministry of Health hospitals. Candidates are also expected to undertake a research project and submit a research project report. At the end of Phase II, candidates must sit and pass Professional Exam II in order to be awarded the Master of Pathology.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I: Year 1

  • Theoretical and Practical Basis in the field of Heamatology, Medical Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.


Phase II: Year 2, 3 &  4 

  • Practical and Theoretical depth in a particular field chosen (Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Pathology, Anatomic Pathology or Chemistry).
  • Practical tasks: Apprentice Clinical Pathology.
  • Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Clinical Practical Methods and Good Medical Ethics.
  • Conduct the research. 
  • Management and quality assurance laboratories. 


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Open to local candidates only.
  2. The candidate must holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS atay MBBCh) or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate. 
  3. Candidates are fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). 
  4. Candidates with work experience of at least 2 years as a medical officer and required to complete a rotation basis by the Ministry of Health.

Master Of Medicine (Family Medicine) (Application for entry is handled by Ministry of Health Malaysia)


OVERVIEW

The Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) was started in 2011 after received an accreditation by The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) . This programme is an on-job postgraduate training programme for a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 7 years. It aims at producing a competent family medicine specialist. This programme is implemented in 3 phases: phase I (year 1) and phase II (year 2 & 3) and phase III (year 4). It is currently conducted as an open system.

Phase I runs for one (1) year which covers 3 major postings of pathology: Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatric. Candidates will undergo training at the accredited ministry of health hospitals. At the end of phase I, candidates will sit for the part I Professional exam. The candidates will need to obtain a pass in the theory paper before being allowed to sit for the clinical part. The candidates must obtain a pass in all the papers before they can proceed to Phase II of the programme.

Phase II of the programme is of two (2) years duration. During the 2nd year, they need to undergo 11 compulsory minor clinical postings, 1 elective posting and 1 research methods course. Candidate will be posted to MOH accredited hospitals during this time. During 3rd year, candidates will undergo the family medicine training by rotation at the public health clinics as well as at the university primary care centre. At the end of phase II, candidates must obtain a pass in the part II professional examination before being allowed to progress to year 4.

Candidates in year 4 will continue the family medicine training at the public health clinics. Candidates are required to submit and pass a thesis dissertation, a family case report and a clinical practice diary prior to the professional examination at the end of phase III. They are required to pass the Professional exam III in order to be awarded the Master of Medicine (Family Medicine).

PHASE I: YEAR 1

- Tertiary Training: Clinical Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O & G), and Pediatrics.

- Tertiary Training: Clinical Family Medicine: Surgery, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Trauma and Anxiety, Dermatology, Radiology, Infectious Diseases, Rehabilitation Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, Palliative Medicine / Sports Medicine, Introduction to Research Methodology.
- Clinical Family Medicine Training at primary health clinics.
- Examination Clinical Phase II (Theory and Clinical)

PHASE III: YEAR 4

- Training In the clinic as of Family Physicians in training under supervision.
- Research project starts from Year 3.
- Preparation of clinical report cases (3 cases).
- Preparation of dissertation report.

Master Of Medicine (Paediatrics)


OVERVIEW

Master of Medicine (Paediatrics) is a professional course offered by Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. It is a four-year programme in which at the end of it, the candidates will acquire the core and essential knowledge of general paediatrics as well as various subspecialities in paediatrics. The knowledge includes basic fundamental theories, the essential clinical skills and sound clinical management concepts including human management aspect.

This programme is expected to produce paediatricians to address the shortage of paediatricians in both the government and private sectors. The programme will also lead to the training of future lecturers and educators for the undergraduate medical degree programmes in Malaysia. Moreover, the candidates for the programme will be exposed to research methodologies and is expected to embark on future researches to enhance the quality of care in paediatric services in the country.

The programme will also produce paediatricians who would go on to subspeciality fields such as cardiology, neurology, oncology and others to further improve the standard of child care.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Year 1

- Theories: Basic Medical Sciences and Basic Sciences Pediatrics.
- Clinical Posting: General Paediatrics, Paediatric and Neonatology Foundation
- Acts as a medical officer in-charged of the wards under the supervision of a consultant.


Year 2 & 3

- Students will undergo 8 posts in 2 years from the sub field of Pediatrics (Elective Courses).
- Students are assigned under the supervision of a consultant, wards, treating patients as well as night shift. -
- Research project began in the beginning of the year 2.

Year 4

- Training: Advanced Pediatrics and students will be given the option to undergo Elective Sub Division.
- Presentation of the Reseacrh Project Reports.

Master Of Medicine (Psychiatry) 


OVERVIEW

Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) is a postgraduate academic degree offered by Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. This program aims to produce competitive medical practitioners who have high ethical values and critical thinking skills to make informed decisions in the area of mental health.

The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are 4 and 7 years, respectively, on a full-time basis.English is the medium of instruction, but Bahasa Melayu is sometimes employed (where relevant).

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I: Year 1

  • Theory: Basic Medical Sciences and Psychiatry.

Phase II: Year 2 & 3

  • Theory and Training: General Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, including Research Methodology.
  • Subspecialty Posting: Rehabilitation and Community Psychiatry, Forensic, Geriatric Psychiatry Child & Adolescent and Drug Addiction.
  • Posting: Internal Medicine / Neurology.


Phase III: Year 4

  • Posting: Psychiatric Consultation (Liaison) and provide a report of a dissertation that began from Year 2 and work as a Psychiatrist trainee (Consultant Psychiatrist in Training) in addition to studying the field of administrative psychiatry.

Master Public Health 


OVERVIEW

The world today is facing with challenging health threats consisting of a variety of emerging and remerging diseases. Public health medicine is a discipline of preventing disease and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals.

This programme prepares students to handle these challenges through multidisciplinary methods that fuse the latest public health knowledge, rational thinking and decision making, professionalism, ethic and collaboration. The Master of Public Health offered by Universiti Putra Malaysia will definitely assist students in their attempt to improve the health of the population. The programme covers all major disciplines in public health medicine such as epidemiology, medical statistic, health services management, health promotion, family health, environmental medicine and occupational medicine.

This programme seeks to produce medical and health professionals who have strong foundation in the broad field of public health medicine, as well as adequate training and preparation to take up speciality and/or sub speciality discipline of their own choice.

International applicants are required to submit relevant equivalent documents for approval by the Senate

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

A Malaysian candidate must have obtained at least a credit in English at SPM level or have passed English courses conducted at the Diploma or Bachelor's level.

INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATES

1. For direct admission, all international candidates from countries where English is not a medium of instruction must have obtained one of the following:

i. 550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version)
ii. Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training)
iii. 70-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version)
iv. 213 for TOEFL Computer-based Test (Academic Version)

The validity period for requirement should not be more than 5 years.

TOEFL ITP is not an acceptable alternative.

Note: An exemption from the English Language proficiency requirment may be given to the following:

i. An applicant who has obtained a degree from any public university in Malaysia shall not be subjected to the English Languange proficiency requirement.

ii. An applicant who has undergone secondary school and Bachelor degree education in the English language shall be exempted form the requirement. Application for exemption must be accompanied by supporting documents that have been certified by the relevant certificate-issuing bodies.

Doctor Of Public Health (DrPH)


OVERVIEW

Doctor of Public Health Program is a full-time program for 3 years or 6 semesters. Each semester runs for 6 months or 24 weeks. The maximum period to graduation is 6 years or 12 semesters.

This program prepares public health professionals as a human resource with expertise in the field of public health. The program also provides an opportunity for public health professionals get special training to enhance their careers and meet the high demand for public and private sector for public health human resource professionals who have the expertise in the field of public health.

As a result, graduates of Doctor of Public Health is able to apply knowledge of public health, research and information technology to solve the problem of public health at the local, national and international levels.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

FIRST YEAR consists of two semesters, namely the First Semester and Second Semester. Each semester is 26 weeks.

First Semester, students must enroll in courses:

  • Four compulsory courses
  • Two elective courses Public Health Expertise
  • Doctor of Public Health Research SPH6922

This course is conducted in two phases: the first phase is for 16 weeks, and the second phase is for 10 weeks

Second semester, students must enroll in courses:

  • A compulsory course, SPH6903 Dissertation Seminar for Doctor of Public Health, and
  • The five elective courses from the list of Public Health Specialist Elective courses offered by the department according to the chosen field by the students, and
  • Doctor of Public Health Research SPH6922

Students will sit for the Comprehensive Examination for the Doctor of Public Health. The implementation of Comprehensive Examination will be coordinated at faculty level or togerther with the Joint Committee on Public Health Malaysia (Malaysia Public Health Conjoint Board).

SECOND YEAR consists of two semesters, namely, Third and Fourth Semester Semester. Each semester is 26 weeks.

THIRD YEAR

Sixth semester, students must enroll in courses:

  • Public Health Doctoral Dissertation SPH6922, and

In the sixth semester, students will also submit a dissertation for examination held at the end of the sixth semester.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students must have appropriate qualifications from a university recognized by UPM, as follows:

  1. Have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS or MBBCh) or other equivalent degree from an overseas university or recognized by the Senate, and
  2. Have a Master's Degree in Public Health (MPH) or equivalent with a CGPA of not less than 3.2

Master Of Medicine (Radiology)


OVERVIEW

Master of Medicine (Radiology) is one of many offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Experts in the field of radiology is indispensable in hospitals, institutions of higher learning and private sector. This program is offered in UPM with aims to produce more radiologist to meet the needs of country that is still too low.

The increasing demand for radiology specialists is expected to increase significantly because of the increasing use of sophisticated technology. Clearer and accurate diagnostic imaging can provide a newer information for the diagnosis of the patients. This makes the role of radiology more relevant. The increased use of interventional techniques in diagnosis and treatment of patients is a need to have more radiologists.

In addition, the need in the career advancement of the medical officer in Malaysia will only be available with the existence of more specific training opportunities in areas of expertise. The increased numbers of radiologist and academics in the field of Radiology wil facilitate in meeting the needs of the country.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I : Year 1

  • Learn the basic theory of medical science of radiology and radiological physics
  • Undergo practical training in various modalities in radiology


Phase II : Year 2 and Year 3

  • Study the intermediate and advanced radiological physics theory
  • Learning the theory of clinical radiology by organ system
  • Continuing practical tasks as clinical radiology apprentice
  • Studying the research methodology, good practical biostatics methods and medical ethics
  • Conducting a research project


Phase III : Year 4

  • Served as a radiologist in training
  • Prepare and present the report of dissertation initiated in Year 2
  • Learn the management and the relevant legislation and quality assurance programs in radiology


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students must have appropriate qualifications from a university recognized by UPM:

  1. Have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS or MBBCh) or other equivalent diploma medical doctor from the University Putra Malaysia or any local or foreign university recognized by the Senate.
  2. Working experience of at least three years after obtaining a medical degree and have completed basic rotations as required by the Ministry of Health.
  3. Students must be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council and have a valid Annual Practicing Certificate.
  4. Students must be aged of not more than 40 years.
  5. Students from abroad are required to meet the conditions as follows:
    • Fluent in English and have a minimum score of 550 for TOEFL or 6.5 in IELTS.
    • To submit relevant documents (Doctoral Degree Certificate, Certificate of Full Practice and in the state of origin, the support of Supervisors, the sponsor) for verification and revision of the university and the Ministry of Health for Annual Practicing Certificate meantime.

Master Of Medicine (Internal Medicine)


OVERVIEW

Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) is a specialist program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. Internal Medicine specialists are needed in the hospitals, universities and private sectors, in line with the Ministry of Health effort to address the problem of shortage of physicians ratio of internal to the community. The faculty provides this program with the aim to produce more internal medicine specialists to meet the high demand for the public and private sector with professionals human resources who have expertise in the field of Internal Medicine. Moreover, the number of academics for the program will be improved and will meet the needs of the physicians in the country from time to time. The program also aims to increase the number of Internal Medicine specialists who are able to conduct relevant researches related to health problems in this area.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I : Year 1

  • Phase I is conducted for 50 weeks. This phase covers the General Internal Medicine, which includes basic and general medical sciences relevant to internal medicine; and clinical supervision in the field of internal medicine under the appointed specialists.


Phase II : Year 2 and Year 3

  • Phase II is conducted for 100 weeks in which candidates must complete training in Medical Specialty I and II. Candidates are compulsory to complete all the attachments within the 100 weeks.
  • The course content includes:
    • Medical Specialty I: candidates are required to undergo seven (7) major postings of Cardiology, Respiratory, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology and Hematology, which run for 12 weeks for each attachment.
    • Medical Specialty II: candidates must undergo four (4) minor postings of Rheumatology, Oncology, Dermatology and Infectious Diseases.
  • In Year 2, the candidates are required to plan and produce a research proposal in addition to conducting the project. Candidates are also required to send a research proposal no later than 18 months after joining this program.


Phase III : Year 4

  • In Year 4 of study, the candidates will be trained to work as a specialist of Internal Medicine. Phase III runs for 50 weeks. This phase includes the General Internal Medicine II and expertise attachements in the field of the sub-specialty of the proposed research projects selected by the candidate in Year 2.

  1. Has Doctor of Medicine (MD) qualification or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  2. Full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  3. Has served for at least four (4) years after passing the basic medical degree.

OVERVIEW

Master of Medicine (Anesthesiology) offers a Master of Medicine (Anesthesiology). The program includes 4-year academic session which allows graduates gain knowledge and skills in the field of anesthesiology and sufficient knowledge in subkepakarannya. The program aims to produce competent expert anesthesiology, critical thinking and be able to continue medical education for self-learning. Anesthesiology graduates have social accountability and act as consultants to enhance the level of expertise, practices and standards of anesthesiology.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I : Year 1

  • Phase I for one (1) year. This phase includes Basic Physiology, Pharmacology and Anesthesiology I.


Phase II : Year 2 to Year 3 middle

  • Phase II is for one and a half (1 ½) years. Phase II consists of Basic Anesthesiology, Anesthesiology Special, Intensive Care and Research Project


Phase III : Mid-Year 3 to Year 4

  • Phase III is for one and a half (1 ½) years. Phase III includes Special Surgery, General Medicine, Anesthesiology and Advanced Senior Apprenticeship.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Admission to this program are as follows:

  1. Candidates must have Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  2. Candidates must be fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  3. The candidate must have experience in clinical anesthesia of not less than one (1) year after full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council.
  4. Fulfill the University and Ministry of Health Malaysia requirement (applicable to MOH's officer only)

Master Of Surgery (Orthopaedics)


OVERVIEW

The program of Master of Surgery (Orthopaedics) is offered to produce more experts in the field of Orthopaedics to meet the high demand for public and private sectors of professionals’ human resources with the expertise in the field of Orthopaedics thereby reducing the ratio of orthopaedic specialists to the population.

The program can also increase the number of academics for the doctoral program in the field of orthopaedic medicine in the public or private institutions. The program also provides career advancement opportunities to the surgical medical officers in Malaysia with the existence of more specific training opportunities.

The program aims to increase the number of orthopaedic specialists who are able to conduct relevant research-related health problems in the field of Orthopaedics in Malaysia.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I : Year 1

  • Phase I is for one (1) year. This phase includes Foundations of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Orthopedic.


Phase II : Year 2

  • Phase II is for one (1) year. This phase consists of General Orthopedics, Trauma, Elective Surgery and Research Project.


Phase III : Year 3 and Year 4

  • Phase III is for two (2) years. This phase includes the Advanced Orthopedics and Research Projects.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The entry requirements for this program are as follows:

  1. Candidates must have Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent qualification recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
  2. Candidates also must be fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
  3. Candidates must have clinical experience of not less than two (2) years after the full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) in which two years must be in the field of surgery that has at least six months of experience in the field of orthopedic surgery
  4. In addition to the above requirements, candidates from abroad are also require
    • Aged under 35 years
    • Fluent in English and have a minimum score of 600 for TOEFL and 6.5 for IELTS
    • To submit relevant documents for verification and review university

Master Of Nutritional Sciences

 

OVERVIEW

The Master in Nutritional Sciences offers a comprehensive set of advanced topics including Nutrition, lifestyles and non-communicable diseases, Global nutrition, advocacy and policy, Food legislation and regulation, Research method and biostatistics in nutrition. This programme is designed to provide continuing education training, which in turn better prepare the workforce amid the rapidly changing landscape in our understanding of the relationship between nutrition and health. Besides, this programme help develop skills to translate evidence-based knowledge into advice, policy and research that improves the health and wellbeing of whole populations.


OBJECTIVE

  1. To produce nutrition professionals who have advanced knowledge in implementing and solving problems in the field of nutrition.
  2. To produce nutrition professionals who are professional, ethical and socially responsible in performing their duties in the field of nutrition.
  3. Produce nutrition professionals who are capable of analyzing and making decisions related to nutrition issues


CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

  • Structured in three semesters (1 year) and is taught in English
  • Student must complete at least 40 credits to graduate which covers: 34 credit hours of compulsory courses and Dissertation and 6 credit hours of elective courses
  • All classes are conducted after office hours weekdays or weekends.

    Compulsory Courses  : 28 credits
    Elective Courses  : 6 credits
    Dissertation  : 6 credits
    Total  : 40 credits


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. The applicant should possess:
    a. a Bachelor's degree in relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.750; or
    b. a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with range CGPA of 2.500 to CGPA 2.749 must have a minimum of three (3) years of 
        working experience in a relevant field or subject to a rigorous internal assessment by the Faculty/Institute; or
    c. a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with below CGPA of 2.500 must have a minimum of five (5) years of working experience 
        in the relevant field.
  2. An applicant who is in the final semester of his Bachelor study programme may be considered for a provisional admission provided that his latest CGPA or its equivalent to academic result satisfies the postgraduate programme admission requirements.
  3. International applicants must have obtained a minimum score of 550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version) or Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training), or 79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test or 213 for TOEFL Computer-based Test or its equivalent.  The validity period should not be more than five years.
